Hurricane Ian Casuialty Loss Appraisals
December 2nd, 2022 3:37 AM
Homeowners whose houses were damage by Hurricane Ian may be able to claim a casualty loss deduction on their taxes.  This involves an appraisal of the property in question before and after Hurrican Ian to determine the loss of value.  The pre hurricae appraisal involves a review of MLS listings, if any, and public records and permits. Homeowners will need to provide additional information regarding the property before the storm including recent updates, repairs, and renovations.  Photos are especially helpful.

The post hurricane appraisal is an as-is opinion of value based on recent sales of similar properties.

It is recommended homeowners consult with tax professionals to ensure they are eligible and proper procedures are followed. More information can be found by searching the irs web site for Publication 547.  Feel free to contact me with any questions regarding these appraisals.
